Was als interessante Auftragsarbeit für das New York Times Magazine seinen Anfang nahm - er sollte damals die Filmarbeiten an der HBO Serie "Rome" in Cinecittà begleiten - wurde zu einer langfristigen fotodokumentarischen Beschäftigung mit den Hinterlassenschaften und Auswirkungen der römischen Kultur, Architektur und Kunst im 21. Jahrhundert. Mithilfe seiner perfekten, teilweise ironischen Bild- und Farbkomposition fixiert Seiland römische Gebäude, Landschaften und Kunstobjekte im Spiegel der Jetztzeit und nützt sie als Ausgangspunkte für seine tiefgreifende visuelle Dokumentation und Interpretation der römischen Kultur. Dieses Buch (Band 2 einer Reihe, die 2013 mit Opus Extractum I begonnen wurde) stellt 58 Orte in 21 Ländern vor, die Alfred Seiland im Zuge seiner Recherchen und auf den Reisen der vergangenen zehn Jahre, auf dem Gebiet des ehemaligen Römischen Reiches und darüber hinaus, besucht hat. Using his brilliantly imaginative, some- times ironic photographic language, taking buildings, landscapes, and artefacts of the Roman Empire as a reference level, Alfred Seiland creates an intense in-depth visual documentation. The photographs always shot with an analogue large-format camera illustrate the conflict of ancient and modern, destruction and conservation, and the longevity of the Roman Empire and its legacy for succeeding societies. This book is the second in a series of Opus Extractum volumes. It explores twenty-one countries all over the territory of the former Roman Empire. All pictures are accompanied by detailed explanatory captions which make references to both historical and contemporary aspects of each work.
