Ethnopharmacological investigation of the spice Kaempferia galanga

Biological screening of the rhizome and leaf of Kaempferia galanga (Family-Zingiberaceae)

In this ethnopharmacological study, the acetone extract of rhizome (ACR), as well as petroether fraction (PEF), chloroform fraction (CHF), methanol fraction (MEF), and acetone extract of leaf (ACL) were subjected to pharmacological activity test. Phytochemical study revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, flavonoids, proteins, steroids, alkaloids and resins in the crude extract of Kaempferia galanga. In Swiss albino mice, analgesic, neuropharmacological and antidiarrhoeal activity were investigated. The extracts were also evaluated for cytototoxicity and antibacterial activity.

Mr. Sheikh Zahir Raihan is working as a lecturer at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Dhaka.
